- Deferred Compensation Plan (457 Plan): Deferred compensation is the voluntary deduction of a portion of an employee’s pay for deposit into an investment account. Contributions can be made pre-tax (reducing the employee’s taxable income for the calendar year) or after-tax. The employee decides how much to contribute, up to IRS limits, and may change the contribution amount at any time. After the employee leaves State employment, investments may remain in their account, may be rolled into another employer’s eligible retirement plan, or may be withdrawn. Unlike other retirement plans, government employees’ 457 Deferred Compensation Plans do not have a minimum age requirement for withdrawal.
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Temporary employees (and members of their household) are eligible to use the Employee Assistance Program, a free counseling and referral resource for a range of life and work issues.
- Prior Service Credit: In the event that a temporary/seasonal employee is hired as a classified employee, they may receive prior service credit. Prior Service Credit only for the purposes of adjusting their leave accrual date. The number of hours worked in the previous two years determines the credit received. No more than 2 years of additional service credit may be earned. Temporary Service Credit does not contribute to the employee’s years of service for the purposes of calculating their pension.
- Family Medical Leave: Effective after employee has been employed by the SoV for at least 12 months; and Worked at least an average of 20 hours per week; or A minimum of 1,250 hours in the 12-month period preceding the commencement of the leave.
- Wellness: Temporary/seasonal employees are eligible for free, flu vaccine clinics and wellness screenings held at state offices. They may also participate in wellness education, but are not eligible for incentives.
- Infants in the Workplace: The State’s policy on Infants in the Workplace applies equally to classified, exempt, and temporary/seasonal employees. Eligibility is at the discretion of the Commissioner.
- Child/Elder-care Resources and Referrals: Temporary/seasonal state employees are eligible to use the free Child Care Resource and Referral Service for assistance in locating child care.
- Workers’ Compensation: Temporary/seasonal employees are entitled to the same Workers’ Compensation coverage (for injuries sustained on the job) as Classified employees.
- Unemployment: Temporary/seasonal employees may be entitled to Unemployment Insurance if terminated (e.g. upon reaching the 1280-hr calendar year limit). Consult with Vermont Dept. of Labor for more information.
- Professional Development: Temporary/seasonal employees are eligible (and sometimes required) to participate in State-provided training opportunities (e.g. through the Center for Achievement in Public Service), at their supervisor’s discretion. Temporary employees may be eligible to participate in other training opportunities at their supervisor’s and Commissioner’s discretion.
