To file an Environmental Violation/complaint:
Information received from Vermont's concerned citizens is vital to our efforts to protect Vermont's environment. If you observe or have knowledge of any activity that may be a threat to human health, cause harm to the environment or if you know a violation of Vermont's environmental laws has taken place, we urge you to contact us.
All complaints regarding potential violations of Vermont's environmental laws are investigated by the Agency of Natural Resources. Some of the media specific complaints are handled by inspectors based within the appropriate program in the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The balance, including those dealing with multiple DEC programs, are handled by this Division.
There are several ways in which you may file a complaint with the Agency Enforcement Division. You may do so in writing, by telephone or facsimile. Regardless of the method you choose, please give us as much information as possible, including: who the violator is (if unknown please give a physical description of the violator(s)), what you believe the violation is, exact directions to the location of the violation, what day and time the violation occurred and any other helpful information such as vehicle description and registration number, etc.. And the sooner a violation is reported, the greater our chances of identifying the violator, reducing environmental impact and prosecuting the violator if that is deemed appropriate. You may file complaints and report violations anonymously. If you wish to remain anonymous, do NOT give your name when calling or completing the complaint form. It is not necessary to use the complaint form provided below, but it would be helpful if you did. Those complaints that are best handled by the DEC will be forwarded to them for action.
DUE TO POTENTIAL SECURITY ISSUES, PLEASE DO NOT E-MAIL COMPLAINTS TO THE ENFORCEMENT DIVISION.
If you need to file a complaint outside of normal business hours, you can contact an enforcement officer at their home or contact the nearest Vermont State Police office.
